Visiting the church of San Francisco is one of the most recommended plans in the Porto guidebooks, so our opinion about this church and its museum had to be in this particular Porto guide.
It was built in the early 14th century in place of a modest temple belonging to the Franciscan order that had been established in the city of Porto in 1223. It is mainly made of granite and although its architectural style is mainly baroque, some Romanesque and Gothic details can also be appreciated.
If you are an art lover you are going to enjoy a lot with this church, as they say it is one of the most impressive samples of Portuguese baroque. And it’s funny, because when you see it from the outside it will look like just another church.
The visit to the church of San Francisco is divided into three parts, which you can visit in the order you prefer, although our recommendation is that you leave the church for the end, because it is the most impressive.
The museum of the church of San Francisco is not particularly large, but it exhibits objects of incalculable value, not only for the materials with which they are made, but for the time they have and the stories they have lived.
